Author(s):Vikash Kumar, Suvra Roy, Debtanu Barman, Devanand Uchoi

Abstract: Tripura is very rich in biodiversity of fish species including other species. There are 25 Mega biodiversity; and North-East stands at 6th position. Among 4 hot spots of India (Sunderban, Western Ghats, Eastern Himalayan region and Indo- Burmese) Tripura is included under Indo-Burmese hot spot. In Tripura 129 species, 78 genera, 33 families and 11 orders of fishes are reported till now. Many small indigenous fish species (SIS) are found to have ornamental values although they may be treated as food fish (e.g. Mystus, Botia, Puntius, etc). Fish seed culture provides a better option for fish farmers because they don’t have to spend the whole year to get the harvest and in a single year they can do three to four harvesting of fish seed and make money in a very short period of time. Seed nursing can ultimately solve the problem of seed availability in market and leads to increase the overall fish production.
