Biomonitoring of Benthic Macroinvertebrates of the Tail Race of Dikhow River, Assam, India

Abstract: In The present study has been conducted on the tail race of Dikhow River. Five stations have been selected. The main objective of the study was to assess water quality of the river using family biotic index. Ten physicochemical parameters have been recorded per month in five stations during the study period. Macroinvertebrates were also recorded monthly. A total of 12 species (Rhynchobdella sp, Physella sp, Soletelina sp, Gammarus sp, Fenneropenaeus sp, Isotomus sp, Caenius sp, Gomphus sp, Lethocerus sp, Hydrophylus sp, Chaoborus sp, Chironomus sp) of benthic invertebrates’ fauna belonging to 3 phyla (Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda), 5 classes (Hirudinea, Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Crustacea, Insecta.) and 13 families (Hirudinidae, Physidae, Anomidae, Gammaridae, Panaediae, Isotomidae, Caenidae, Gomphidae, Belostometidae, Nepidae, Hydrophilidae, Chaoboridae, Chironomidae) were found in the study. Family biotic index values showed poor water quality of the river.
